Introduction

Dr Faith Liao is an Associate Professor at the Graduate Institute of Medical Humanities (GIMH), Taipei Medical University (TMU), Taiwan. She concurrently serves as the Deputy Director of the Center for Education in Holistic Care & Human Flourishing at Taipei Medical University Hospital (TMUH), where she leads the Ed-AI Team in pioneering technology-driven clinical pedagogy.

Dr Liao’s academic journey is uniquely shaped by her clinical roots in Emergency Medicine. This background in acute, high-pressure care provided the impetus for her transition into medical humanities, where she now focuses on the development of a Holistic Care Education Ecosystem. Her institutional leadership experience is extensive, having previously served as the Deputy Director of the Center for Faculty Development at TMU and the Convener of the ‘One Campus’ Holistic Care Education Platform.

Recognised with the SNQ National Quality Award and the Taiwan Sustainability Action Award (Silver), Dr Liao’s research leverages Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL) and AI-enabled simulation to bridge the gap between academic theory and clinical practice. She specialises in instrument development and psychometric validation, with her work on the Taipei Holistic Screening Scale (THSS) serving as a benchmark for integrating humanistic assessment tools into high-pressure clinical environments.

The Human Flourishing Lab, in synergy with the Ed-AI Team at Taipei Medical University Hospital, is an interdisciplinary research hub dedicated to the cultivation of a Holistic Care Education Ecosystem. Our theoretical foundation is rooted in Carl Rogers’ person-centred approach, which we operationalise through Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL) and Scientific Measurement to achieve Human Flourishing in healthcare.

Our research is structured around the strategic pillars below:

  • Theoretical Foundation (Person-Centred Approach): Applying Rogerian principles to medical education to foster environments where students, clinicians, and patients can thrive as whole individuals.
  • Psychometrics & Scale Design: We specialise in the design, cultural adaptation, and validation of assessment tools that measure humanistic outcomes. This includes the development of the Taipei Holistic Screening Scale (THSS), bridging clinical observation with rigorous statistical validation.
  • The THSS & Clinical Implementation: Building on the PI’s experience in Emergency Medicine, the lab focuses on the ongoing refinement and integration of the Taipei Holistic Screening Scale (THSS). This work ensures that holistic assessments are effectively operationalised within standard clinical and educational workflows.
  • TEL & Humanistic Simulation: Led by our Ed-AI team, we utilise TEL and AI-enabled virtual patients to create immersive environments for mastering empathy and ethics, using our bespoke scales to measure educational impact.

By synthesising the academic rigour of the Graduate Institute of Medical Humanities with the practical demands of the hospital’s Department of Education, we offer international interns the chance to engage in research that is both theoretically profound and clinically transformative.

Research Topics
  • Holistic Care Education Ecosystems: Developing systemic frameworks to integrate person-centred care into clinical and academic settings, grounded in Carl Rogers’ person-centred approach and Human Flourishing theory.
  • Psychometrics & Scale Development: Design and validation of clinical and educational instruments to measure holistic care, empathy, and professional identity.
  • Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL) in Clinical Pedagogy: Developing digital frameworks that support person-centred education.
  • Ed-AI & Humanistic Simulation: Investigating AI-enabled virtual patients to foster empathy and ethical decision-making.
  • Holistic Care Education Ecosystems: Developing systemic, TEL-supported frameworks grounded in Carl Rogers’ person-centred approach.
  • THSS (Taipei Holistic Screening Scale) Implementation: Researching the digital deployment and cross-cultural validation of holistic screening tools in acute care.

Honor
  • SNQ National Quality Award (Symbol of National Quality): Recognised for excellence in healthcare quality and the innovative design of clinical assessment tools (THSS).
  • Taiwan Sustainability Action Award (Silver): Awarded for contributions to sustainable holistic care initiatives and educational ecosystems.
  • Institutional Leadership in TEL & Faculty Development: Acknowledged for pioneering roles in TMU’s ‘One Campus’ Holistic Care Platform and hospital-based Ed-AI initiatives.
