Introduction

Dr. Li-Wei Kang is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at National Taiwan Normal University, Taipei, Taiwan (since Feb. 2024). His research interests include multimedia content analysis, multimedia communications, and AI applications. He currently serves as Chair of the Image, Video, and Multimedia (IVM) Technical Committee of APSIPA (since Jan. 2025) and as an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence. He has also served as an Editorial Board Member of the International Journal of Distributed Sensor Networks, Guest Editor of APSIPA Transactions on Signal and Information Processing, and held various organizational roles at APSIPA ASC conferences (2012, 2013, 2018, 2023). Dr. Kang’s honors include the IEEE MMSP Top 10% Paper Award (2013), ACM MM SMP Challenge Best Performance Award (2019), APSIPA ASC Best Paper Award (2020), IEEE AVSS Best Innovative Award (2025), and recognition as a World’s Top 2% Scientist (2022, 2024, 2025).

The Multimedia and Artificial Intelligence (MMAI) Lab, established in August 2019 at the Department of Electrical Engineering, National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), Taipei, Taiwan, is led by Prof. Li-Wei Kang. The lab focuses on research in Computer Vision, Image Processing, Multimedia Content Analysis, Artificial Intelligence, and a variety of multimedia applications.

Currently, the lab comprises 16 master's students and 4 undergraduate students who are actively engaged in research on image restoration and enhancement techniques, as well as artificial intelligence-driven multimedia applications. The lab's research is primarily funded by projects from the National Science and Technology Council, Taiwan, and through Industry-Academia Collaboration Projects.

Educational Background

Li-Wei Kang received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from National Chung Cheng University, Chiayi, Taiwan, in 1997, 1999, and 2005, respectively.
