Introduction

Prof. Meng-Hsiu Tsai is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mold and Die Engineering at National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology, Taiwan. He received his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from National Sun Yat-sen University in 2005.

Before joining the university, he worked at the Metal Industries Research and Development Centre and the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology. He also served as a guest researcher at the Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University, Japan.

His research focuses on laser welding, metal additive manufacturing, laser powder bed fusion, electron beam additive manufacturing, thermal spraying, powder production, surface engineering, and metal processing. He has extensive experience in integrating experimental investigation, materials characterization, numerical simulation, and industrial applications.

He has led and participated in multiple research projects funded by the National Science and Technology Council and industrial partners. His research outcomes include journal publications, patents, invited presentations, and technology development related to additive manufacturing, welding, functional alloys, and powder metallurgy.

The Precision and Additive Manufacturing Laboratory is located at the Jiangong Campus of National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology. The laboratory conducts research on laser welding, laser powder bed fusion, metal additive manufacturing, thermal spray coatings, alloy design, surface engineering, and computational process analysis. Current projects integrate experimental measurements with thermal fluid simulation to study heat transfer, molten metal flow, solidification, defects, and material properties.

Available research facilities include laser  additive manufacturing equipment, metallographic preparation equipment, optical microscopy, surface profilometry, mechanical testing equipment, and material characterization instruments. The laboratory provides an international research setting. Interns work with graduate students and faculty members through regular research meetings, experimental training, progress presentations, and technical discussions.

Research Topics

Laser Welding of Ultra Thin Stainless Steel Sheets for Metallic Bipolar Plates

The research examines hump formation during high speed laser welding of SUS316L ultra thin sheets for proton exchange membrane fuel cell metallic bipolar plates.

The main topics include:

  1. Effects of laser power, welding speed, beam configuration, focal position, and shielding gas on hump formation.
  2. Thermal fluid behavior of the weld pool during high speed laser welding.
  3. Relationships among molten pool instability, recoil pressure, surface tension, fluid flow, and periodic hump formation.
  4. Comparison between single beam and dual beam laser welding.
  5. Development of a process map for stable welding and hump suppression.
  6. Evaluation of weld morphology, penetration depth, heat affected zone, surface profile, distortion, and gas tightness.
  7. Numerical simulation of heat transfer, fluid flow, free surface evolution, and solidification.
  8. Image analysis and quantitative evaluation of hump height, hump spacing, and weld consistency.
