Research Field
Prof. Sheng-Chi Chen received Ph.D. from National Taiwan University, Taiwan. He is a Professor in Department of Materials Engineering, Ming Chi University of Technology, Taiwan. He has published more than 100 research articles in high standard SCI journals. His research areas are Photodetection, Gas sensing, Ion sensing, Thermoelectric materials, Transparent conductive oxide (TCO) films, Magnetic films, Thin Film Processes and analyses.
The Nanotechnologies for Information Storage Lab focuses on the design, fabrication, and characterization of advanced thin-film materials for information storage, sensing, and energy-related applications. The lab integrates novel physical vapor deposition (PVD) techniques with materials engineering to develop a wide range of metals and metal oxides for applications including transparent conductive oxides, thermoelectricity, bio- and optical sensing. By establishing clear correlations between deposition parameters, plasma conditions, microstructural evolution, and device performance, the lab aims to advance high-performance materials and devices for next-generation information storage and optoelectronic technologies.

(1) In August 2022, supervised graduate students Min-Chen Chuang and Jing-Lin Chou, who received the Honorable Mention Award in the Poster Presentation Competition at the 2022 Annual Meeting of the Taiwan Thermoelectric Society.
(2) In November 2022, supervised graduate student Jing-Lin Chou, who received the 2022 Master’s Thesis Award from the Taiwan Information Storage Association. Among eight applicants, he was one of only three award recipients and the sole awardee from a private university.
(3) In 2023, supervised graduate students You-Sheng Lu and Min-Chen Chuang, who demonstrated outstanding academic performance and successfully obtained travel grants of NT$45,000 each from the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) to attend the International Conference on Metallurgical Coatings and Thin Films (ICMCTF) in San Diego, USA, and the THERMEC International Conference in Vienna, Austria, respectively.
(4) In June 2023, doctoral students Shikha Sakalley and Mahesh Kumar, under my supervision, received the First Prize (Excellent Award) and Honorable Mention Award, respectively, in the Poster Competition at the 2023 International Forum on Plasma and Thin Film Technologies.
(5) In March 2023, doctoral student Shikha Sakalley received the Outstanding Youth Award from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST) in recognition of her excellent research achievements.
(6) In December 2023, doctoral student Shikha Sakalley was awarded the NT$100,000 “Living Assistance Scholarship for International Students” from the CTCI Foundation.
(7) In 2024, supervised graduate student Cheng-Hao Tsai, who demonstrated outstanding academic performance and successfully obtained an NSTC travel grant of NT$25,000 to attend the International Symposium on Sputtering and Plasma Processes (ISSP) held in Kyoto, Japan.
(8) From June to September 2024, doctoral student Min-Jhen Chuang, under my supervision, conducted a three-month research exchange program at Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien), Austria.
(9) In May 2024, supervised graduate student Shang-Yu Chan received the Best Poster Presentation Award at the ACTSEA 2024 International Conference.
(10) In June 2024, doctoral student Nishchal Pardhi received Second Place in the Research Paper Competition at the Formosa Plastics Group Applied Technology Symposium.
(11) In October 2024, doctoral student Nishchal Pardhi received the Honorable Mention Award in the Poster Presentation Competition at the Annual Meeting of the Taiwan Coating and Thin Film Technology Association.
(12) In December 2024, doctoral student Mahesh Kumar received the NT$150,000 “Research Scholarship for International Students” from the CTCI Foundation.

Job Description
1. Develop and study oxide or nitride films by combining physical vapor deposition (PVD) and solution processes to create hybrid nanostructures for self-powered broadband photodetection.
2. Develop hybrid multi-dimensional nanostructures in bidirectional photodetectors for advanced optical systems.
3. Develop and design an enhanced, wavelength-specific photodetector or other sensing technique utilizing surface plasmon resonance.
Preferred Intern Educational Level
Ph.D. students major in materials science, electronic and electro-optical Engineering, or related fields.
