Introduction

Professor Shiu-Wu Chau is a Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Engineering Science and Ocean Engineering at National Taiwan University. He has long been engaged in research and education in computational fluid dynamics, fluid engineering, and ocean engineering applications. He leads the Flow Simulation Laboratory (FSL), where his research focuses on the development and application of CFD techniques, high-performance computing, and numerical simulation methods for complex engineering problems. His major research interests include wind energy, ship hydrodynamics, polymer processing, and thermal plasma.

The main research fields of FSL are the development and application of CFD techniques, high-performance computing, and related computing environments. FSL’s research group, mainly composed of PhD and graduate students, has successfully completed many research projects. These projects have been financially supported by government agencies, research institutions, and industrial partners. FSL’s software resources, including in-house and commercial CFD codes, are capable of analyzing multi-scale and multi-physics problems encountered in scientific and engineering applications. With pre- and post-processing tools, the FSL team has great flexibility in handling complicated geometries and visualizing important characteristics of complex flow fields. High-performance computing clusters and workstations are installed in FSL to analyze CFD problems using parallelization techniques and reduce the required computation time.


Research Topics

Prof. Chau’s work contributes to the advancement of computational methods and their practical applications in electronic cooling, renewable energy, marine engineering, manufacturing processes, and thermal plasma flows.


Honor

Professor Shiu-Wu Chau has received numerous academic honors and professional recognitions for his contributions to engineering research, teaching, and industrial applications. He has been recognized by National Taiwan University for excellence in teaching and academic research performance, including awards from the College of Engineering and university-level research incentives. His scholarly achievements have also been acknowledged through best paper and outstanding paper awards from professional societies and international conferences. In addition to his academic awards, Professor Chau has been frequently invited as a keynote speaker, invited lecturer, session chair, and committee member at major conferences in computational mechanics, flow dynamics, marine engineering, wind energy, plasma technology, and polymer processing. He has also served in important academic and professional leadership roles, including editorial, review, advisory, and technical committee positions for universities, government agencies, industry projects, and engineering societies. These honors reflect his broad impact in research, education, and engineering practice.


Educational Background

Professor Shiu-Wu Chau received his Bachelor of Science degree from the Department of Naval Architecture at National Taiwan University. He continued his graduate studies at National Taiwan University, earning a Master of Science degree from the Institute of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. He later pursued advanced doctoral research in Germany and obtained the degree of Doktor-Ingenieur from the Institut für Schiffbau at the University of Hamburg.


Job Description

The internship program at National Taiwan University and a world-wide leading company in Taiwan provides students with practical training in advanced thermal management technologies and product development. Interns will participate in projects related to air cooling, liquid cooling, cold plates, coolant distribution systems, and thermal solutions for high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, data centers, and electronic devices. Under the guidance of experienced engineers, students will gain hands-on experience in thermal design, computational simulation, testing, validation, and manufacturing processes. The program aims to strengthen participants’ engineering knowledge, problem-solving skills, and industry experience while preparing them for future careers in thermal engineering and high-performance electronic cooling.
