Professor Little Bee's dream team (Salmonella, VRE and probiotics)
Research Field
Biography
Professor/Dr. Shiuh-Bin Fang is the Associate Dean of the College of Medicine, Vice Dean of the Office of Research and Development, and Professor of Pediatrics at Taipei Medical University. Additionally, he is a senior attending physician in the Department of Pediatrics at Taipei Medical University Shuang Ho Hospital.
Professor Fang earned his PhD under the mentorship of Professor Alan Phillips at University College London in 2011. During his doctoral research, he collaborated with Professor Duncan Maskell at the University of Cambridge and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, identifying six novel Salmonella virulence genes critical for bacterial adhesion, invasion, and intracellular replication in human epithelial cells. Following the completion of his PhD, Professor Fang returned to Taiwan, where he has since continued his distinguished clinical and academic career at Taipei Medical University.
Professor Fang’s research spans a range of topics, with a strong focus on translational medicine bridging basic science and clinical application. His key research areas include: (1) Characterizing novel Salmonella virulence genes involved in pathogen-host interactions using advanced models such as human intestinal polarized in vitro organ cultures and M cell models; (2) Developing methods for early detection of Salmonella and its antibiotic resistance; (3) Discovering new antibiotics and probiotic combinations to combat ceftriaxone-resistant Salmonella; (4) Identifying predictive biomarkers for nontyphoidal Salmonella bacteremia; (5) Investigating the effects of probiotics and functional foods on human intestinal infections and decolonization of antibiotic-resistant gut bacteria; and (6) Exploring the role of gut microbiota in health and disease.
Building on his foundational work in Salmonella pathogenesis, Professor Fang has expanded his research to include antibiotic resistance genes, the development of novel diagnostics and therapeutics, and the use of optimized probiotics for decolonizing vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) and inhibiting ceftriaxone-resistant Salmonella. His studies into microbiota-associated diseases reflect a deep commitment to advancing our understanding of the gut microbiome and its implications for human health.
Professor Fang’s innovative contributions to the fields of pediatrics, infectious disease, and microbiome research underscore his dedication to translational medicine, seamlessly integrating basic science with clinical practice.

Professor Fang's P2 lab is located in the Common Laboratory II for Translational Medicine on 11 F of Teaching & Reseach Buildking of TMU Shuang Ho Campus in New Taipei City, Taiwan.
Professor Shiuh-Bin Fang’s laboratory integrates pediatric gastroenterology, host–pathogen biology, probiotics, antimicrobial resistance, genomics, and translational therapeutics. His early work with NTUT developed nanotechnology-based, non-PCR methods for rapid Salmonella and AMR detection, followed by PhD training at UCL with collaborators at Cambridge and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, where he identified novel non-typhoidal Salmonella virulence genes involved in epithelial adhesion, invasion, intracellular replication, inflammation, and defensin responses. Since returning to Taiwan, his group has characterized key genes including speG, yqiC, and wzxE, applied transcriptomics and WGS to NTS AMR mechanisms, developed patented multigene diagnostic panels, and advanced probiotic strategies for VRE decolonization and inhibition of resistant enteric pathogens. The team’s synergy is strengthened by Prof. Sheng-Tung Huang’s medicinal chemistry expertise in naphthoquinone–imidazolium/YM155 derivatives, Prof. Yu-Wei Wu’s computational microbiology and machine-learning AMR prediction, and Dr. Yun-Ting Kuo’s ICU recruitment and genomic clinical support, enabling a comprehensive pipeline from clinical isolates and patient sampling to mechanistic assays, diagnostics, and novel antimicrobial/probiotic interventions.
