Introduction

Dr. Chuen-Yu Cheng has been serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Animal Science and Biotechnology at Tunghai University since 2021. His research expertise encompasses animal feed husbandry, animal waste treatment, and animal proteomics. On campus, Dr. Cheng is actively involved in the practical application of smart agriculture, specifically responsible for managing the intelligent layers feeding system. Furthermore, he conducts highly innovative experiments, such as the application of earthworm manure (vermicompost) in broiler chicken production, bridging the gap between animal production and environmental sustainability.

Under his leadership, the Nutrition and Sustainable Development Laboratory focuses on optimizing poultry husbandry management and nutritional formulation, while promoting sustainable livestock development through effective waste treatment and recycling.

Core Mission:

Optimizing poultry husbandry management and nutritional formulation.

Promoting sustainable livestock development through effective waste treatment and recycling.

Recent Research Topics (Primarily focusing on Broilers):

Eco-friendly Litter Testing: Investigating alternative litter materials and evaluating the efficacy of supplementing litter with probiotics and essential oils.

Dietary Additive Development: Evaluating the effects of various novel feed additives on poultry health and production potential.

Core Evaluation & Analysis Parameters:

Growth Performance: Evaluating key economic indicators such as body weight gain and feed conversion ratio (FCR).

Intestinal Traits: Analyzing intestinal morphology and assessing overall gastrointestinal health.

Immune Function: Examining immune responses and general disease resistance.

Gut Microbiota: Investigating the diversity of the intestinal microecology and the dynamic changes within the microbial community.

Compost and Litter Analysis: Analyzing the general properties and physicochemical characteristics of compost and poultry litter.

Future Outlook:

Dedicated to systematically integrating Animal Nutrition, Husbandry Management, and Post-rearing Waste Recycling to establish a comprehensive circular economy and a sustainable development model for the poultry industry.

Research Topics

1. Eco-friendly Poultry Litter & Gut Health

Alternative Bedding: Evaluating broiler litter supplemented with probiotics and essential oils to improve gut microbiota and reduce footpad dermatitis.

Vermicompost Application: Utilizing earthworm manure in rearing environments to enhance microclimates and waste valorization.

2. Circular Agriculture & GHG Mitigation

Methane Reduction: Co-composting layer hen manure with Pennisetum grass varieties to minimize greenhouse gas emissions.

Metagenomic Analysis: Tracking microbial shifts, metabolites, and functional genes during the composting process.

3. Precision Poultry Nutrition & Smart Management

Novel Feed Additives: Testing dietary supplements to boost broiler growth performance, intestinal health, and immunity.

Smart Farming: Optimizing nutritional strategies and production efficiency for late-phase laying hens using intelligent feeding systems.

4. Epigenetics & Environmental Stress

Heat Stress Responses: Investigating the epigenetic and physiological adaptations of livestock to environmental heat stress.

Biomarker Discovery: Applying proteomic and molecular techniques to identify key markers for stress resistance and metabolic efficiency.
