Introduction

Dr. Yuan-Yu Hsueh is currently Professor in the Departments of Physiology and Surgery at the College of Medicine, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU),  and serves as Associate Professor and Attending Surgeon in the Division of Plastic Surgery at National Cheng Kung University Hospital. He is also the Principal Investigator of the Center for Transformative Bioelectronic Medicine. Dr. Hsueh received his MD degree from NCKU and obtained both his Master’s and PhD degrees at NCKU. After completing his residency training in plastic surgery, he has continued his career as a physician-scientist, actively engaged in both clinical practice and research. His clinical expertise includes hand surgery, peripheral nerve surgery and reconstruction, wound healing, and scar management, with a long-standing focus on functional recovery following peripheral nerve injury. In the research field, Dr. Hsueh’s work centers on basic and translational studies of peripheral nerve regeneration, tissue engineering, stem cell therapy, and bioelectronic medicine. From 2017 to 2019, he served as a Visiting Research Scholar in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he completed his postdoctoral training with an emphasis on multidisciplinary strategies for peripheral nerve regeneration, integrating materials science, stem cell therapy, and electrical stimulation. After returning to Taiwan in 2019, he established the Neuromodulation & Regeneration Lab at NCKU, dedicated to translational research on neuromodulation in peripheral nerve regeneration and neuroinflammation. His research team actively collaborates with domestic and international academic institutions and biomedical industry partners, focusing on the development of implantable bioelectronic medical devices, preclinical validation, and clinical trial design to advance innovative therapeutic strategies for peripheral nerve and neuromuscular regeneration. Dr. Hsueh has extensive experience as a principal investigator in clinical trials and in medical device development, with expertise in study design, participant safety oversight, data quality management, and regulatory compliance, effectively translating proof-of-concept innovations into clinically applicable therapies while ensuring scientific rigor, ethical standards, and clinical relevance.

This laboratory is an interdisciplinary translational research team dedicated to integrated basic and clinical studies on the repair and regeneration of the nervous and neuromuscular systems. Guided by clinical needs, the laboratory integrates expertise in clinical medicine, bioengineering, biomaterials, and bioelectronic medicine. Its major research focuses include peripheral nerve regeneration, neuromodulation, mechanisms of neuroinflammation, wound healing, scar management, and the development and application of innovative medical devices. The research strategy begins with investigations into the pathophysiological mechanisms of disease and injury, followed by preclinical validation using cellular and animal models, and further extends to clinical trial design and feasibility evaluation to accelerate the clinical translation and practical implementation of research outcomes. The laboratory maintains close collaborations with domestic and international academic institutions, biomedical industries, and engineering teams, actively promoting the development of implantable bioelectronic medical devices and integrated therapeutic strategies for applications in peripheral nerve and neuromuscular functional reconstruction. Through interdisciplinary integration and systematic research, the laboratory aims to establish innovative therapeutic platforms with scientific rigor, clinical feasibility, and translational value, thereby advancing the sustainable development of nerve regeneration medicine and bioelectronic healthcare technologies.
