Introduction

PI, Dr. Shao-Pu Tsai, focuses on bridging microstructures with the mechanical properties of materials. For this, he expertises in various kinds of microscopy techniques, from nano- to macro-scales to resolve the macroscopic texture, orientations, grain-related information, and precipitation behaviours in structural materials. Then, macroscopic as well as micro-mechanical tests are applied on samples to evaluate their properties. Materials under investigation include steels, aluminum alloys, high-entropy alloys, and so on. Besides bulky metallic samples, Dr. Tsai also delves into physical vapor deposition (PVD), where modification concept is applied to aim for harder and more corrosion-resistant surfaces.

The Microscopy, Microanalysis, and Mechanics (MMM) Lab is a research group dedicated to advancing fundamental understanding and practical applications of materials through state-of-the-art microscopy, microanalysis, and related characterization techniques. Located at National Taiwan University, the lab actively collaborates with domestic and international partners and provides a dynamic training environment for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students. Our group focuses on developing and applying advanced observation and analysis methods to tackle critical problems in materials science, including metallic materials, additive manufacturing alloys, and powder metallurgy systems, amongst others. Students gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge instruments while working on topics that connect microstructure, processing, and properties. The lab maintains a strong record of academic excellence, with members frequently receiving competitive scholarships, research fellowships, and poster awards from national societies and international conferences. Graduate and undergraduate students are encouraged to present their work in technical poster competitions, English presentation contests, and professional society meetings, building both scientific and communication skills.
