Pharmaceutics Laboratory
Research Field
Distinguished Professor Jia-You Fang, now work in Graduate Institute of Natural Products, Chang Gung University. He has established a research team comprising domestic and international scholars. The team primarily focuses on drug formulation design and drug delivery targets, particularly the research and development of nanocarriers for drugs and active ingredients, and natural actives for mainly regulating and treating immune-inflammatory diseases. Additionally, Professor Fang has established animal evaluation platforms for various diseases, which are utilized by pharmaceutical industries to verify the effectiveness and safety of their products. These animal models established in the laboratory include sepsis, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-induced pneumonia, acute lung injury, liver fibrosis, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and cutaneous photoaging. Professor Fang has published a total of 373 SCI journal papers, cited more than 17,000 times (Scopus), with an h-index of 71 (Scopus). For three consecutive years, Professor Fang has been recognized among the top 2% of the world's top scientists according to Stanford University statistics. Based on these data, the United Daily News included Professor Fang in the list of Taiwan’s top 35 clinical and basic medical researchers, ranking 23rd for two consecutive years. In 2023, Professor Fang received the "Outstanding Contribution Award for Domestic Medical Research Achievements to the Development of Medical Technology, National Health, National Society and Industrial Development" at the 33rd Wang Ming-Ning Award. Only three scholars in Taiwan received this award. In recent years, Professor Fang has actively carried out industry-university cooperation projects. To date, 31 industry-university cooperation projects have been implemented. Professor Fang holds seven US or Taiwan patents, mainly for developing new indications of natural products and designing nanoformulations. Professor Fang has long served as a review committee member for pharmacy-related fields in the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Health and Welfare, and Ministry of Education, assisting the government in promoting research on pharmacy and traditional Chinese medicine. Additionally, Professor Fang serves as a consultant to the Medical and Pharmaceutical Industry Technology and Development Center. In this corporate consortium, he guides the unit plans and supervises its progress.
In Japan, pharmaceutical research falls under the field of medical pharmacy, while in Europe and the United States, it is considered part of pharmaceutical company research and development. Its essence lies in using newly designed prescriptions, additives, or materials to maximize the pharmacological activity of a given drug, minimize its toxicity and side effects, or prolong its retention time in the body. Its significance lies in making clinical medication safer and more effective, thereby improving patient compliance. Pharmaceutical science is considered a downstream process in drug development within pharmaceutical research; it is an applied science. The main work of this laboratory is to design new prescriptions for drugs and explore their ability and extent to improve the shortcomings of traditional dosage forms.
