Introduction

Professor Lan-Yuen Guo is a distinguished scholar and academic leader in the fields of biomechanics, human movement science, sports medicine, and rehabilitation engineering at Kaohsiung Medical University (KMU) in Taiwan. He currently serves as Dean of the College of Health Sciences, as well as a full professor in the Department of Sports Medicine at KMU, where his work bridges fundamental research, clinical application, and interdisciplinary education.

With decades of expertise, Professor Guo’s research interests focus on biomechanics of human movement, sports injury prevention and management, physical therapy technologies, and instrumentation for clinical and performance assessment. His work encompasses the quantitative analysis of human motion, the development of measurement tools and feedback systems for motor performance, and the application of engineering principles to support rehabilitation and athletic performance.

Professor Guo has received several prestigious awards, including the Future Technology Innovation Award, the National Innovation Award in the Academic Research Category, and, in 2024, he was elected as a Fellow of the European College of Sport Science.

In recent years, Professor Guo’s team has led several funded research projects with both national and collaborative institutional support. These projects highlight the lab’s focus on innovative wearable technologies, exercise physiology, and functional assessment for diverse populations:
Integrated Smart Active Cooling System Development and Exercise Application Validation aimed at creating and validating a smart cooling system for sports and rehabilitation environments.

Blood Flow Restriction Training Parameters in Older Adults with Sarcopenia — a two-phase National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) funded study exploring the mechanisms and functional outcomes of blood flow restriction training on lower limb muscle function in elderly populations.

Professor Guo’s lab is not only a research center but also an educational environment where graduate students and trainees engage in cutting-edge methodologies, translating scientific insights into practical tools for rehabilitation, performance enhancement, and preventive health care. Through a combination of advanced instrumentation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and real-world validation studies, the laboratory continues to contribute both to scientific knowledge and to the development of impactful health technologies.
