Introduction

Dr. Pei-Wen Peng is a Professor in the School of Dental Technology, College of Oral Medicine, at Taipei Medical University, Taiwan. She received her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from National Taiwan University, an M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from National Yang-Ming University, and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from National Cheng Kung University. Her interdisciplinary academic background has enabled her to integrate engineering principles with dental science, biomaterials, and regenerative medicine, establishing a research program that bridges fundamental materials research and clinical applications in oral healthcare. She has served as a faculty member at Taipei Medical University since 2010 and has been a Professor since 2020. She also serves as the Vice Dean of the College of Oral Medicine, contributing to academic leadership, research development, and international collaboration.

Dr. Peng's research focuses on the design, fabrication, characterization, and clinical translation of advanced biomaterials for oral and craniofacial reconstruction. Her work integrates materials science, biomedical engineering, digital dentistry, and additive manufacturing to develop next-generation dental materials with improved mechanical performance, biocompatibility, functionality, and sustainability. She is particularly interested in understanding the relationships among material composition, microstructure, manufacturing processes, and biological responses, with the goal of developing innovative materials that address current clinical challenges in dentistry.

 

The Oral Functional Reconstruction Laboratory is dedicated to advancing innovative biomaterials, digital manufacturing technologies, and tissue engineering strategies for oral rehabilitation and functional reconstruction. Our research integrates materials science, biomedical engineering, and dentistry to develop next-generation solutions that restore oral function while improving long-term clinical outcomes and patient quality of life.

Through interdisciplinary collaboration, the laboratory aims to translate fundamental biomaterials research into clinically applicable technologies for oral healthcare, craniofacial reconstruction, and precision dentistry.


Research Topics

Our major research areas include:

  • Bio-based and sustainable dental biomaterials, including thermoplastic polyurethanes for clear aligner applications and other environmentally friendly polymeric materials.
  • Advanced ceramic materials and additive manufacturing, focusing on stereolithography-based fabrication of zirconia, alumina, and calcium phosphate bioceramics for dental and craniofacial reconstruction.
  • 3D printing and digital dentistry, emphasizing high-precision fabrication, prosthetic accuracy, and customized oral rehabilitation devices.
  • Surface modification and multifunctional biomaterials, including antimicrobial, bioactive, and tissue-regenerative materials for dental and orthopedic applications.
  • Bone tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, combining biomaterial scaffolds, stem cells, and photobiomodulation to promote bone regeneration.
  • Biomechanical characterization and biological evaluation, including mechanical testing, stress relaxation, degradation behavior, biocompatibility, antibacterial performance, and preclinical validation.
