Dr. Thangavelu Kokulnathan
Research Assistant Professor, Department of Electro-Optical Engineering, National Taipei University of Technology, Taiwan
I am honored to serve as a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Electro-Optical Engineering at National Taipei University of Technology. After completing my Ph.D., I worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow from September 2018 to August 2020, which laid the foundation for my current role, held since September 2020. Transitioning from postdoctoral research to this position has been one of my greatest pleasures.
My passion for discovery and innovation is deeply rooted in electrochemical applications and Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS). With a robust background in materials science, chemistry, and electrochemistry, I have dedicated my career to designing and fabricating advanced sensing platforms that address pressing societal challenges. My research focuses on:
- Electrochemical Sensors
- Electrochemical Storage
- Electrochemical Conversions
- Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy
These areas have led to significant contributions recognized through numerous publications in leading scientific journals. I also explore the integration of advanced materials and nanotechnologies to enhance sensor performance and functionality. As a research assistant professor, I am committed to mentoring and guiding the next generation of scientists and engineers, fostering an environment of curiosity and innovation.

Lab's introduction
We are at the forefront of research in electrochemical sensors, energy conversion and storage, and Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy. Our mission is to develop cutting-edge sensing technologies and advanced materials that address pressing global challenges such as climate change and resource management.
Our lab fosters a dynamic research environment that encourages collaboration and experiential learning, empowering students to cultivate essential skills in materials science and electrochemistry. By engaging in both hands-on experimentation and theoretical analysis, our team aims to push the boundaries of scientific knowledge.
Our research focuses on providing students with an immersive experience in advanced topics, including Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, electrochemical energy conversion and storage, in-situ/operando Raman analysis, and theoretical studies. Students will develop skills in designing sensitive SERS substrates, enhancing energy storage systems, conducting real-time analysis of chemical processes, and engaging in theoretical modeling. This comprehensive approach equips them with the knowledge and experience needed to tackle pressing challenges in electrochemical applications and materials science.
