Introduction

Yu-Ming Tu is an assistant professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at National Taiwan University (NTU). Yu-Ming completed his Ph.D. in 2021 under the supervision of Profs. Benny D. Freeman and Manish Kumar in Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He undertook postdoctoral training with Prof. Michael S. Strano in Chemical Engineering at MIT from 2022 to 2024. His previous research has received several recognitions and awards from the Department of Energy (DOE) (2024), the Materials Research Society (MRS) (2022), the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) (2021), and the North American Membrane Society (NAMS) (2021). Yu-Ming joined the National Taiwan University (NTU, Taiwan) as an Assistant Professor and received the Talent Recruitment Research Grant in August 2024.

Yu-Ming joined the Department of Chemical Engineering at National Taiwan University (NTU, Taiwan) in August 2024.

My research team consists of 1 (jointly appointed) research assistant, 2 PhD students, 6 master's students, including one international student from the Philippines, and three undergraduate students.

Please find more details and recent news on my lab website,  https://ymtu-lab.com/

Research Topics

Yu-Ming's research focuses on developing two-dimensional (2D) polymeric high-density porous materials and thin films for sustainable separation technologies and quantum sensing devices to address global challenges related to resource shortages and energy issues. Key areas include ion transport phenomena, battery separators, nanofiltration, rare earth metal ion recovery, seawater desalination, membrane distillation, membrane fouling mechanisms, and energy utilization.

Our current primary areas:

a)Droplet interfacial bilayers (DIBs) System: fluid dynamics, ion separations, and conversions under 1D nanoscale confinement.

b)2D organic polymeric materials: structure arrangement, self-assembly, and nanoporous channel design

c)Robust, self-healing 2D porous membranes and quantum sensing devices: ion detection under 2D confinement, cancer cell detection, and in-situ battery protective layers

d)3D in-situ simulation for micro/nanoparticle filtration and membrane fouling prediction
