Introduction

Currently, Dr. In Fan-Yu is an assistant professor in the Department of English for Global Communication at Hungkuang University. Dr. In has created and taught eight English-only MOOC courses sponsored by Ministry of Education, Taiwan.

The Lab of English for Global Communication is typically a specialized environment designed to enhance English language skills for students, professionals, or learners aiming to improve their ability to communicate effectively in a global context. Such a lab may offer a range of tools and activities focused on developing proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English, with an emphasis on real-world communication.

The lab might include:
1.    Interactive Learning Tools: Software, apps, and online resources that allow learners to practice their language skills in simulated global communication scenarios.
2.    Co-teaching Activities: Two or three teachers in collaborative tasks, discussions, or presentations to encourage teamwork and English usage in social and professional contexts.
3.    Assessment and Feedback: Regular tests and personalized feedback to track progress and improve areas of weakness.
4.    Cultural Awareness: Programs to familiarize learners with cultural nuances and communication styles across English-speaking countries.
5.    International Relations: Online workshops and onsite activities on foreign cultures.

The goal of such a lab is to provide learners with the tools, confidence, and skills necessary to communicate effectively in an increasingly interconnected world where English serves as a common language across diverse cultures and industries.


Research Topics

The Lab of English for Global Communication* offers a dynamic and multifaceted approach to improving English proficiency in real-world contexts. Given the nature of its focus, various research topics can be explored within this context. Some of these topics might include:

 - Analyzing the role of gamified learning tools in maintaining learner engagement and motivation in global communication

Educational Background

Dr. Fan-Yu In (應芳瑜博士) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English for Global Communication at Hungkuang University. She earned her Ph.D. in English Literature from the Department of English, National Changhua University of Education. Her current research focuses on English literature, translation studies, MOOCs, English for Specific Purposes (ESP), and the Cambridge University Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT). She holds four TKT certifications issued by Cambridge University, including CLIL and Modules 1, 2, and 3.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities
•    Present the intern’s culture, cultural taboos, customs, history, social norms to diverse audiences (e.g., students, Taiwanese people, and participants from different countries).
•    Explain cultural practices using clear, factual language and real-life examples.
•    Facilitate cross-cultural dialogue and respond to questions objectively and respectfully.
•    Design or adapt cultural content (talks, online workshops, guided activities) according to audience needs.
•    Support intercultural learning by addressing cultural differences and potential misunderstandings.
•    Collaborate with the IP to conduct research on cultural study in relation to English literature.
 

Preferred Intern Educational Level

Undergraduate and master’s students majoring in International Relations or TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language)

Applicants whose native language is not English must provide proof of English proficiency test scores (such as Cambridge English Test, IELTS, or TOEFL).
