Introduction

My research focuses on certain cross applications of Analytical Chemistry and Nanomaterials aimed at solving issues in medicine and food safety.

In our lab, my students and I study the surface properties of nanoparticles by analytical spectroscopies. Through chemical modifications, we change these properties and develop nanoparticles that possess specific affinities for chemical or biological molecules of interest. These nanoparticles function either to improve spectroscopic analyses of chemical compounds or to interact with biological molecules for imaging or biological activities. We study carbon and metal nanoparticles in two major themes: 1) controlled adsorption of molecules on the surface of these particles and 2) adsorption of these particles on live cells or another material.

Research Topics

Raman Spectroscopy/Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS), Surface Chemistry, Nanomaterials, and Separation Technology.
