Introduction

Dr. Hwa is a full Professor at the National Taipei University of Technology. She has published more 100 papers (‪for SCI paper, see https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=KWG_XD4AAAAJ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬) and hosted many international academics and industrial meetings. Currently, she has initiated research projects on advanced materials such as graphene, carbon nanotube and nanoparticles for biomedical and environmental applications. Her recent work has been highlighted by the prestigious industrial report from IDTech(https://www.idtechex.com/en/research-article/national-taipei-university-of-technology-ntut/18544?donotredirect=true). She has been invited as a speaker for many academic research institutes and universities in China, Japan, Hong Kong, UK, and USA. She has been invited as a keynote speaker for many international meetings. Since Professor Hwa is an indigenous Taiwanese, she had expanded her effort to develop an e-learning platform for science education, with culturally inclusive pedagogy. The work is under special funding from the Taiwan Ministry of Science and Technology, the support from the Harvard Club and other Ivy leagues club in Taiwan. She was also the formal chairman for PRIDOC (Pacific Region Indigenous Doctors Congress) in affiliated with representative organizations from five different countries and regions (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, USA and Pacific islands)
Dr. Hwa has more than 20 years of business experience. At the age of 30, Dr. Hwa was the director of the clinical laboratory on human genetics at the Cathay Medical Research Institute. Working with medical doctors, she had developed several clinical laboratory tests for prenatal screening services. She had established several international collaborations with companies such as IBM, GeneData and Lion Bioscience. She was also affiliated with mProbe (http://mprobe.com/), as vice president of science & business development during 2019-2021, at Taiwan and Hong Kong. Currently she is the executive advisor for the mProbe group. In 2022, Dr. Hwa founded AcusMu Medtech company, specialized on dissolvable microneedle patch for transdermal delivery.
Dr. KuoYuan Hwa graduated and received her Ph. D. from the School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University (https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/som/) under the late Professor Paul T. Englund. Her thesis was on the isolation of the N-linked glycosylation mutants of Trypanosoma brucei.

Genomics Science & Polysaccharide Engineering Lab

As genomics and biotechnology evolve, this lab plays a crucial role in advancing scientific knowledge and practical solutions. Prof. Kuo-Yuan Hwa: Leads the lab and contributes to research in genomics, peptide science, and polysaccharide engineering.  Other faculty members collaborate on various aspects of the lab’s research.  The research areas of the lab are as follows:

  • Genomics: Investigating genetic information, including genome sequencing, gene expression, and functional genomics.
  • Peptide Science: Studies on the function and applications of peptides
  • Carbohydrate Engineering: Exploring the properties and functions of carbohydrates.
  • Nanomaterials: Synthesis of novel nanomaterials as ultra-sensitive sensors for environmental and medical applications.

We have extended our previous knowledge of the bulk materials to nanomaterials. Recently, we have successfully synthesized many novel composite nanomaterials and utilized the unique properties of new nanomaterials as electrochemical sensors for detecting small harmful molecules in water (SDGs 6 and 14) and metabolites in humans (SDG 3).   We have also transferred our research results to start-ups to increase the social impact. As an international lab, we use English and welcome scientists from overseas to join us.

Research Topics
  • Nanomaterials  (with critical economic metals)
  • Electrochemical sensors,
  • Multi-Omics (Genomics, Proteomics, Metabolomics, and Lipidomics),
